Newhaven Harbour Storm Photography Case Study
This photography case study documents Storm Éowyn as it hit Newhaven Harbour lighthouse, capturing the scale, movement and intensity of the coastline during extreme conditions. The project focused on timing, composition and atmosphere to create images that tell a visual story of place and power.

Landscape Photography – The Approach
Newhaven Harbour is known for its exposed coastline and striking lighthouse, making it a compelling location during storm conditions. As Storm Éowyn approached, the aim was to document the force of the sea against the structure of the harbour exploring contrast, energy and movement through carefully timed photography.
Working in unpredictable weather required preparation, awareness and patience. The changing light and fast-moving conditions meant every frame needed to be intentional.

The Approach
Rather than simply capturing dramatic waves, the focus was on storytelling through composition. I positioned the lighthouse as a point of structure against the power of the sea, using framing and timing to highlight the relationship between environment and architecture.
The project involved:
– monitoring weather patterns and timing conditions
– selecting safe vantage points
– adjusting exposure for fast-changing light
– capturing movement without losing clarity
– refining images in post-production to preserve atmosphere
The goal was to create images that felt immersive rather than observational.
The Outcome
The final imagery captures the intensity and atmosphere of the storm while maintaining a sense of balance and clarity. The series demonstrates how environmental photography can communicate scale, emotion and narrative without staged elements.
This project strengthened my portfolio by showcasing work in dynamic, unpredictable conditions, highlighting both technical control and creative direction.

Projects like this highlight the power of strong visual storytelling. Environmental photography allows brands, organisations and individuals to communicate atmosphere and identity through imagery that feels authentic and grounded in real locations.
